“For
every tattooist, the human body becomes a blank canvas. Instead of paper or velum, tattooists create their images on skin.
Instead of brushes and pens, tattooists’ tools include needles
and ink. For some tattooists, however, the analogy
of flesh to canvas, needle to brush is not quite sufficient. The human body is not flat, so the idea of the flesh as a canvas
fails to reflect the
three-dimensional component of creating an image on a human body. Some tattooists engage with the
body’s natural contours, utilizing the form and motion inherent in our body’s landscape
to enhance the art,
and seeking ways to use the art to enhance the form as well. Instead of working simply as a painter adorning the flesh canvas, these
tattooists combine elements of sculpture, architecture, and other three-dimensional design, enhancing the body’s natural
ebbs and flows with the addition of tattooed images.
Among the artists who incorporate the human form into their work,
Shannon Schober is one of the most committed to this approach.”
“In both his photography and his paintings,
the same themes pervade as are present in his tattoo work: female forms, bold colors cut with black, and nature’s beauty.”
-From the 2009 Wolfgang Publications book, Tattoo: Behind the Needle:
Chapter 5 Shannon Schober-Tattoo
as Sculpture
“With a unique, delicate style utilizing negative space and the body’s
natural flow and motion to enhance the tattoo design, Shannon Schober is one of Asheville’s most respected artists.”
“Vitality Tattoo’s Shannon Schober is known for his effective use of the body’s natural shape in his tattoo
placement”
- from the 2008 Wolfgang Publications Book- Tattoo: From Idea to Ink
“Shannon Schober combines his punk rock past with a delicate, mature aesthetic
to create tattoos that are truly unique.”

I have a piece on each arm
from Vitality which were my very first ones. Not only is Shannon an extremely talented artist,
he's ultra professional and very down to earth. I was very comfortable getting
my pieces done by him and enjoyed it tremendously.
His work is unique and beautiful as well as quality. I get so many compliments on them and hand out a lot of cards.
I can't wait to get
these pieces added
too. I would highly recommend checking out Vitality. -Anne S
Shannon is an incredible artist with over 20 years of tattoo experience. I would recommend him to anyone, especially
those looking for
a large piece with lots
of color. His negative space techniques are beautiful and truly unique as body art.
Besides his talents as an artist, he's also a very kind, genuine conversationalist.
I intend to have all future pieces designed and tattooed
by him.-Katie M
I found Vitality
Tattoo and met Shannon while on vacation from Florida in the fall of 2008. At that time I was having problems finding
someone that could design and complete a full back piece for me. The only tattoo
I had at that time ran down the center of my back.
Shannon looked a rough drawing I had and told me that it would not be a problem to come up with a layout that would
work. Since that
time we have completed
my back piece and a large chest piece. He is almost through with my second leg piece. I have one on each
leg that runs from my back piece to my ankles. Addi tonal work co connect my chest
tattoo to my back piece is in the works. We have
approximately sixty hours in all of my tattoos. They are all wonderful works of art. Any additional tattoos that
I might get will be completed
by Shannon
at Vitality. If you are looking for a great studio with a quite, clean, and friendly peaceful atmosphere, don't look any further.

You should all check
out Shannon Schober at Vitality, The man definitely has a style unseen in the industry so far and he is one of the nicest
folks I
have ever met. You need to get
a tattoo from him before he gets too big and his schedule fills up. Mark my words, you heard it here first. -j. tuck
This is my third tattoo and actually a cover up of my first tattoo as well. I love
day lilies and had about 25 varieties in the garden at my last house.
Shannon Schober from Vitality Tattoo in Asheville, NC did it and he is amazing. I just sent him a photo of my old
tat (a leaf) and told him I wanted a
day
lily and the rest is history. He just put out a book of his work and my tat is in there (page 1). We did it in one sitting
and it took 6 hours.

Thursday delivered murky gray, unfilmworthy skies, but a smiling-eyed Shannon Schober,
a tattoo artist from Asheville, North Carolina who generously
agreed to meet us in Athens when, upon asking him for an interview, we discovered he would be traveling with his
family during the Asheville leg of
our
trip. Art Apocalypse, an Athens tattoo shop, generously agreed to host Shannon as a guest artist for the few days he would
be in town. Megan spent
a couple of days
exclaiming, "People are so generous!" She’s easily moved. We had the unique opportunity to hang out with him
for a few days, to talk
about both the
minutiae and the more profound aspects of life, and we found him to be a truly remarkable individual. He explained to us that
connecting with
his clients on a personal
level is important to him, and as newbie interviewers, we were seriously impressed with Shannon’s ability to get people
talking by
asking just the right questions
and listening intently to the answers, even while working with a noisy tattoo gun. We talked about the difficulties of raising
and educating children, the blend of skill
and humor utilized by bands such as Ween and the Butthole Surfers, the process of growing up within an outsider
culture, and hunting mushrooms (to cook with, come on), to name a few. To short
this long story, we are really big fans. And Meredith, after getting her first
tattoo with Shannon, said she wouldn’t have expected the relationship between artist and client to have been
such an important and positive part of the ink
experience. We both feel like we not only got a great interview, but also made a lasting friendship. And we can’t
get over how incredible it is that of all the
tattoo
artists in all the world, we managed, with such ease, to find someone so amazing. -Road Trip Nation Interview

This is a wonderfully, colorful book that is a great representation of Shannon's
work. I would recommend it and him to anyone who asks. He has taken tattooing
to a new level of art.- Alysen Mccaughey
My trip to North Carolina to get tattooed by Shannon was so worth it. He helped me celebrate a life-changing event
by giving me the most beautiful tattoo to
celebrate and remember it. The tattoo is original, colorful, and looks great. Everything I wanted and more. I love
getting compliments on it and I get a lot. -Jess S.
Shannon is high quality and very professional. My wife and I both had custom designed pieces done
last year and we are planning additional
work this
winter. One of the things I like about working with Shannon is the interactiveness of the design process where we can develop
an
idea over weeks or months before touching needle
to skin.-Howard E.
"Shannon is first and foremost an artist. I have known people who tattoo for money first art
second. Shannon is contrary and it shows in his work." -Ryan T. (my first ever tattoo recipient)
